What Are MCB Accessories?

MCB accessories are supplementary devices designed to enhance the functionality, protection, and control capabilities of Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs). These modular add-ons transform basic circuit protection devices into intelligent, integrated components of modern electrical distribution systems. Operating under IEC 60898-1 (circuit-breakers for household and similar installations) and IEC 60947-5-1 (control circuit devices), MCB accessories enable remote operation, status monitoring, safety interlocking, and seamless integration with building management systems .

MCB accessories are characterized by their modular 17.5mm width (half-module or full-module design), allowing them to mount directly on DIN rails alongside MCBs or clip onto the breaker body. This standardized modularity ensures compatibility across major manufacturers including Schneider Electric, ABB, Hager, Siemens, and Chint .

The global MCB accessory market is experiencing significant growth driven by smart building adoption, energy management requirements, and industrial automation, with manufacturers offering comprehensive portfolios that enhance safety, convenience, and system intelligence .

Core Functions & Operating Principle

Shunt Trip (ST) - Remote Tripping Mechanism

Component

Function

Technical Details

Electromagnetic Coil

Generates magnetic field when energized

AC: Inrush 200VA, sealed 20VA; DC: Inrush 200W, sealed 20W; Insulation Class F (155°C) or H (180°C)

Plunger Mechanism

Strikes trip bar to release mechanism

Hardened steel, spring-return, stroke 3-5mm, force 2-5N

Mounting

Snap-fit on MCB left side

Tool-free installation, automatic alignment with trip bar

Indication

Mechanical flag on fascia

Visual indication of coil operation

Operating Sequence:

Control voltage applied to shunt trip terminals (A1-A2)

Coil energizes, generating magnetic field (AC or DC)

Plunger strikes MCB trip bar with sufficient force to overcome mechanism latch

MCB trips open, main contacts separate

Mechanical flag indicates shunt trip operation

Coil de-energizes, plunger returns via spring

MCB requires manual reset (reclosure)

Applications:

Emergency stop systems (E-stop buttons)

Fire alarm system integration (automatic shutdown)

Remote load shedding (demand response programs)

Generator transfer schemes (synchronized opening)

Undervoltage Release (UVR) - Voltage Monitoring

Parameter

Specification

Safety Function

Pickup Voltage

0.85 × Un (breaker can be closed)

Prevents closure on inadequate voltage

Dropout Voltage

0.35-0.70 × Un (35-70% of rated)

Automatic trip on undervoltage

Time Delay

Instantaneous or 0.1-3s (electronic types)

Prevents nuisance tripping from momentary dips

Continuous Duty

100% rated voltage

Coil energized continuously during normal operation

Width

17.5mm (1 module)

Standard DIN rail mounting

Operating Principle: The UVR coil remains continuously energized during normal operation, mechanically holding the MCB closure mechanism. When supply voltage drops below the dropout threshold for the specified time:

Electromagnetic force becomes insufficient to maintain latch

Mechanical spring drives trip mechanism

MCB opens automatically

Prevents reclosure until voltage returns to pickup level

This protects:

Motors from low-voltage starting (high current, overheating)

Equipment from brownout damage

Safety against unexpected restart after power restoration

Auxiliary vs. Alarm Contacts

Feature

Auxiliary Contact (AX)

Alarm Contact (AL)

Operation

Changes state with MCB handle position

Operates only on automatic trip (overload/short-circuit)

Indication

Fault trip only

1NO+1NC standard

Rating
