What Is a DIN Changeover Switch?

A DIN changeover switch is a modular, rail-mounted transfer switching device designed to safely transfer electrical loads between two power sources. Complying with IEC 60947-6-1 (transfer switching equipment) and IEC 60947-3 (switch-disconnectors), these switches feature standardized DIN rail mounting (TH35, 35mm top-hat rail) enabling seamless integration into distribution panels alongside MCBs, RCDs, and other modular devices.

DIN changeover switches serve as critical components for:

Manual transfer between mains and backup power (generators, UPS)

Source selection in dual-supply systems

Load isolation for maintenance and safety

Energy management (peak shaving, dual-tariff switching)

Current ratings range from 16A to 125A for modular DIN rail types, with larger panel-mounted versions extending to 3200A. Operating positions typically follow I-0-II configuration (Source 1 - Off - Source 2), ensuring clear visual indication and positive break isolation.

Modular Width Standards (DIN Rail):

2 Modules (35mm): 16A-40A, 2-pole

3 Modules (52.5mm): 40A-63A, 2/3-pole

4 Modules (70mm): 63A-125A, 3/4-pole

Source 2 contacts definitively open

Mechanical interlock prevents Source 2 closure

Position 0 (Off/Isolation):

Both Source 1 and Source 2 contacts open

Double break isolation per pole

Visible contact gap for safety verification

Padlockable for maintenance lockout

Position II (Source 2 Connected):

Source 1 contacts definitively open

Main contacts closed on Source 2 side

Mechanical interlock prevents Source 1 closure

Safety Features

Positive break indication: Visible contact separation confirms isolation

Forced open contacts: Mechanically linked to handle position, cannot weld closed

Door interlock: Prevents enclosure opening when switch is ON

Padlocking facility: Up to 3 padlocks in OFF position for safety during maintenance

Stable positions: Unaffected by vibration, shocks, or voltage fluctuations
